Biography
Artis Brown Jr. is inspiring, influential, encouraging, and motivating. He endured and overcame many challenges and obstacles throughout his life. At the age of 18, Artis was sentenced to 3-years in prison for Aggravated Assault. After his release from prison on January 9, 1996, Artis worked several unpleasant jobs over the course of 2-years. It was then he decided he needed a change; therefore, he pursued a college degree in hopes of a better life. In August 2000, at the age of 25, Artis enrolled into St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC where he was an academic scholar. While in college, he made the Deanšs list twice for maintaining a 3.0 and above grade point average. He also played football and was voted offensive captain twice. On May 7, 2005, Artis received a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice; that is when his life had purpose, and his goals had measure.
Because of his felony conviction, Artis faced many job related challenges that he thought a college degree would mitigate. Artis did not understand why he faced such harsh consequences for his mistakes. He felt that society was still holding his past against him. Instead of giving up, he continued to press on and persevere through difficult times, even though he was repeatedly denied the opportunity to work in and out of his field. He kept pursing an honest living and found a way to make ends meet by working odd jobs for pay less than minimum wage.
Although he went to college his past still hindered him until he met Don Chaney, the Director of Bay Point Schools in Miami, Fl. Mr. Chaney informed Artis that he thought that he was the right person for the job and wanted to give him that "second chance." After several interviews, Artis was finally gainfully employed. Artis currently works with reformative juveniles at Bay Point and volunteers his time every Friday at Turner Guilford Knight (TGK) Correctional Facility in Miami, Fl. His purpose is to speak to young juvenile men about the importance of choices and decisions; instilling hope, faith, desire, determination, and the will to love thyself no matter what.
